Acne

Ayurvedic Treatment for Acne

Introduction

Our skin has tiny holes known as pores that become clogged by dead skin cells, oil, bacteria, and dirt. This blockage may result in the development of pimples and if these pimples affect your skin frequently, then it is known as acne. Acne is one of the most common skin problems mainly affecting teenagers, and adults. The main affected areas of the acne include the face, chest, shoulders, and back. Acne may result in emotional stress, and scar on the skin as well.

Symptoms of Acne

Acne may develop anywhere in the body but the most common areas of getting acne are the face, shoulders, neck, chest, and back. One suffering through Acne, typically notices the pimples having white or black color. Both whiteheads and blackheads are termed as comedo. Whiteheads and blackheads are the most common lesions observed in acne while other types can also occur. Inflammatory lesions are more likely to cause scarring of the skin. These may consist:

  • Pustules, the little red pimples having pus at their tips
  • Papules, the red, raised and small bumps caused by infected and inflamed hair follicles
  • Cysts, the large bumps found beneath the skin and contain pus.
  • Nodules, the solid, painful lumps under the skin surface

Causes of Acne

The main cause of acne development is the blockage of skin pores with oil, bacteria, and dead cells of the skin. Our each skin pore is the opening to a follicle which is made up of an oil gland and hair. The oil gland releases oil that goes towards the hair, out of the pore, and onto the skin. The sebum maintains the softness of the skin and keeps it lubricated. One or more complications in this lubrication process can result in the development of acne. These complications may include:

  • The build-up of bacteria in the pores
  • Dead skin cells deposited in the pores
  • Too much oil secreted by the follicles

These problems may develop pimples. A pimple grows when bacteria fill out in a clogged pore and the oil becomes unable to escape.

Triggers of  Acne

Here are some triggers that may worsen the existing condition of acne:

  • Hormones

Increased levels of some hormones like androgens can increase the risk of getting infected with acne while suffering through puberty. The hormonal changes make the sebaceous gland produce more sebum which further forms clogged pores.

  • Unhealthy diet

Diet is a major factor in improving or worsening the acne condition. Eating unhealthy food items triggers the formation of acne. Excess fried foods, junk foods, and processed foods are the major food products responsible for acne development.

  • Excess stress

Taking excess stress can imbalance your hormonal levels and result in the development of acne.

  • Several medications

The adverse effects of several medications can also trigger the formation of acne. The use of medicines having lithium, androgens, and corticosteroids in them can make you prone to acne.

Diagnosis

In most cases, the dermatologist diagnoses the acne just by watching or doing a physical examination of the affected area. The doctor may also ask your medical history and some of the following questions:

  • Any allergies to the drugs
  • About affected area or something about a sensitive area
  • About previous skin problems
  • Use of steroids for bodybuilding
  • Any existing mental condition such as depression or stress

After going through these questions, the doctor will diagnose you with acne.
