Angina

Angina can be described as a painful sensation in the area of the chest due to decreased supply of oxygen to the muscles of the heart. Angina is not a disease but a condition associated with any of the various heart disorders such as coronary artery disease. In the coronary artery disease, blood vessels become narrow which further reduces the oxygenated blood supply to the heart, resulting in angina. The main reason behind almost every heart disease is the formation of plaque in the blood vessels which occupies more space and reduces the space for flowing of blood.

Angina can affect any individual after 21 years of age but most of the angina cases are found in the men above 45 years and women above 55 years of age.

Symptoms of Angina

Mainly there are three types of angina which are Stable, Unstable and Variant. The symptoms may vary according to the type of angina. But the most common symptom in all angina types is severe chest pain. This pain becomes worse over time if proper treatment is not taken at the initial stages. Some other symptoms of angina include tightness of chest, difficulty in breathing, pain in left arm or shoulder, pain in back, etc especially when doing some physical workout.

What are Main Causes of Angina?

The reason behind the occurrence of Angina is an underlying heart problem. Deposition of fat, cholesterol, triglycerides or we can say plaque make the arteries narrow and reduce the blood flow. When we are taking rest, our heart needs less oxygen but during any physical workout or exercise, the heart requires a large amount of oxygen. But due to decreased supply of oxygenated blood, the heart doesn’t receive enough oxygen and patients begin to feel pain in the chest area where the heart is located.

So, the main cause behind the development of angina is the constriction of blood vessels by plaque formation.

How Angina can be Diagnosed?

If you feel any chest pain or shortness of breath, immediately visit a doctor’s clinic. To diagnose angina, the doctor may ask your medical history, complete health symptoms and family history of heart diseases also. The doctor may also ask your smoking habits, lifestyle habits, body weight, pattern of exercise, daily routine activities, etc. To check the normal functioning of the heart, the doctor may also recommend you to perform several tests including electrocardiogram (ECG), chest x-ray, MRI of heart, blood tests to determine the level of cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. The doctor will try to detect a cardiac disorder, due to which angina has developed.
