About Liver Disorder

The liver is the second largest organ inside the body that helps to digest food, removes harmful toxins, and stores energy. This organ maintains the metabolism and is considered the most important organ of the body. The term liver disorder refers to several types of conditions which can affect the liver and can be caused due to inherited conditions, infections, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption. With time, it may cause serious complications and scarring. The use of certain drugs like acetaminophen can affect the liver.

Causes of Liver Disorders

Various types of liver disease are caused due to several factors like:

  • Inherited disease – it is a condition that can develop genetically.
  • Harmful toxins – excessive consumption of fat and alcohol can lead to liver disease.
  • Viral infection – Hepatitis A, B and C is caused due to viral infection.

Some other causes of liver disorders are

  • Parasitic infections
  • Scaring and hardening in bile ducts
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in which there is an accumulation of fat in the liver
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis in which bile ducts get destructed
  • Hemochromatosis – building up of excessive iron content in the body
  • Wilson’s disease – in this disease copper gets accumulated in the liver

Symptoms of Liver Disorders

  • The most common symptom of liver disease is jaundice (yellowish discoloration of white eyes). It usually occurs when the liver is not able to clear bilirubin from the body.
  • Pain on the right side of the abdomen
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Easily bruising
  • Swelling in the legs or arms
  • Weakness
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Bloody or pale-colored stool
  • Loss of appetite

Diagnosis

In the early stage, there will be no symptoms but can be detected by blood count or liver function test. Some tests that should be done for proper diagnosis are –

  • Complete blood count
  • MRI, ultrasound, or CT scan to check the degree of scarring and
  • Liver biopsy to check the liver tissues

Prevention from Liver Disorders

Here are some of the prevention tips to prevent your cleaver from damage especially due to diet and lifestyle-

  • Do exercise regularly
  • Avoid alcohol consumption
  • Reduce the consumption of red meat
  • Avoid drinks or foods that have a high level of Trans fats or fructose in it
