Thyroid Disease

Our body consists of a small organ located on the front side of the neck, wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). This organ is known as the Thyroid gland. The shape of this gland is like a butterfly- smaller in the middle with two wide wings extending around the side of the throat. Like other glands, the thyroid gland releases hormones that do various vital functions for the well being of the body.

But in abnormal circumstances, the thyroid gland begins to produce inappropriate quantities of thyroid hormone which further impact the overall body functions especially the body metabolism.

In this article, we’ll read about thyroid disease and how to treat it with herbal remedies.

INTRODUCTION

Thyroid disease is a medical condition in which the thyroid gland starts producing an abnormal amount of hormones. In normal circumstances, the thyroid gland releases hormones for the proper functioning of the body. But when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, the body starts to use energy too quickly, and body metabolism increases very much. This condition is called hyperthyroidism. While the condition of less than required production of thyroid hormone is known as hypothyroidism. Decreased body metabolism, weight gain, and fatigue are major symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Thyroid disease can be developed in anyone’s body whether he is a man, woman, an infant, teenager, or an elder.

SYMPTOMS

The major signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism are:

  • Weight loss
  • Trouble in sleeping
  • Anxiety, nervousness, and irritability
  • Vision problems or irritation in the eyes
  • Feeling sensitive to heat
  • Irregularities in the menstrual cycle
  • Increased size of the thyroid gland

The major signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism are:

  • Having a hoarse voice
  • Having dry and coarse hair
  • Experiencing forgetfulness
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling tired (fatigue)
  • Experiencing an intolerance to cold temperatures
  • Frequent and heavy menstrual periods

CAUSES

The main two types of thyroid disorders are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both these conditions can be caused by genetic factors, inflammation of the thyroid gland, birth defects or some other diseases affecting the normal functioning of the thyroid gland such as:

Conditions that can cause hypothyroidism are:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (an autoimmune condition)
  • Iodine deficiency
  • Thyroiditis
  • Postpartum thyroiditis

Conditions that can cause hyperthyroidism are:

  • Thyroiditis
  • Graves’ disease
  • Excess iodine
  • Nodules

RISK FACTORS

Here are some factors that can increase the risk of developing thyroid disease. These factors may include:

  • Being a woman
  • Going through pregnancy or delivered a baby within the past six months
  • Exposure to the radiation to the upper chest and neck
  • Have been treated with radioactive iodine or anti thyroid medications
  • Having a family history of thyroid disease
  • Having age more than 60 years
  • Suffering from any autoimmune disease such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease

COMPLICATIONS

Taking no proper treatment of thyroid disease for the long term can lead to a wide range of health problems such as:

  • Mental health issues
  • Heart problems
  • Goiter
  • Birth defects
  • Infertility
  • Myxedema
  • Peripheral neuropathy

DIAGNOSIS

The diagnosis of thyroid disease may be late as its symptoms are very common with other diseases. When you visit a doctor’s clinic, he may ask your complete health symptoms, medical history, family history of thyroid, and prescribe some blood tests to diagnose hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

Blood tests: Blood tests are done to determine the level of TSH hormone in the blood. The level of thyroid hormone thyroxine is also checked sometimes. The low levels of thyroxine and increase levels of TSH mean an underactive thyroid. That’s because the pituitary gland releases more TSH in an effort to stimulate the thyroid gland into producing more thyroid hormone. TSH test is the best method to diagnose thyroid disease.
