Diagnosis of ITP Disease
During a physical exam, the doctor will search for symptoms of bleeding and infection. For example the doctor may search for purplish patches on the skin or mucous membranes, as well as red spots on the skin. These are indicators of under-the-skin bleeding.
Your platelet count will very certainly be checked by blood testing. These tests usually involve the following:
- A thorough blood count is required. The number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in your blood is determined by this test. Red and white blood cell counts are normal with ITP, but platelet levels are low.
- A blood smear test- For this test, some of your blood is put on a slide. A microscope is used to look at your platelets and other blood cells
- A blood test may be performed to look for antibodies (proteins) that attack platelets. If your platelet count is low, your doctor may suggest additional testing to confirm the diagnosis of ITP. For example- Bone marrow tests can reveal if your bone marrow is producing enough platelets.
- Your doctor may test you for HIV, hepatitis C, or H. pylori if you’re at risk for these illnesses, which could be associated with ITP.
- Mild ITP patients may show little or no indications of bleeding. They may only be diagnosed if a blood test performed for another cause reveals low platelet levels.
