What is Eosinophilia?
Eosinophilia is a chronic disorder that develops due to more than required levels of eosinophils in the blood. Eosinophils are white blood cells present in the body and play a crucial role in protecting the body against inflammation and various diseases.
The normal value of the eosinophil count is less than 350 cells per microliter of blood. An increase in this normal value of eosinophil is harmful to health as the protein present in an eosinophil can damage the body organs. The condition in which eosinophil count increases to 500 per microliter is termed eosinophilia.
Eosinophil cells become active during allergic disease, infections, due to several medications or in the condition when bone marrow secretes more cells.
Types of Eosinophilia
Mainly, eosinophilia disease is categorized into two categories:
- Extrinsic: In this type of eosinophilia, etiological factors lie outside the eosinophil cell lineage such as fungi, worm infestations, medications, etc.
- Intrinsic: In intrinsic eosinophilia, the etiological factors lie inside the eosinophil cell lineage such as asthmatic pulmonary eosinophilia.
Symptoms of Eosinophilia
The major signs and symptoms of eosinophilia include:
- Cough
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Breathlessness
- Frequent wheezing
- Skin rashes
Cause of increasing eosinophil count
An increase in eosinophil count can be observed in various diseases or abnormal conditions such as:
- Skin disorders (Impetigo, scabies, abscess, etc)
- Autoimmune diseases (Lupus, pernicious anemia, psoriasis, arthritis, etc)
- Parasitic and fungal disease (Trichinosis, ascariasis, lymphatic filariasis, etc)
- Allergic disorders (Drug allergy, hay fever, asthma, etc)
- Tumors (Ovarian cancer, lung cancer, etc)
Risk factors:
Here are some factors which can increase the risk of being affected with eosinophilia:
- Allergic food
- Liver cirrhosis
- Drug side effects
- Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Diagnosis of Eosinophilia
When you’ll visit a doctor’s clinic, the doctor will ask about your complete health symptoms, medical history, and family history of having eosinophilia. To diagnose the patient with eosinophilia, the doctor may also recommend:
- Several blood tests including complete blood count, LFT and serological test
- Echocardiogram to assess the thrombi (such as endocardia, mural)
- X-ray
- Bone marrow biopsy
All these tests will help the doctor to diagnose the patient with eosinophilia.
