Diet Chart for Parkinson Disease

Parkinson’s disease can be described as a progressive neurological disorder affecting the normal functioning of the brain. The word progressive is used in this disease as it gets worse with time and neurological means that the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the body mainly gets affected.

The patient feels symptoms like slow body movement, postural instability, tremors, memory problems, fatigue, low mood and constipation while suffering from this disease.

Various necessary nutrients and healthy fats are present in the nuts which boost the learning capability, motor and memory coordination, repair damaged body cells and tissues, etc. Try to include a handful of all types of nuts in your daily diet.
  • Carrots: Carrots are known for their positive effect on eye health but carrots also work as a fuel for the brain functioning. Vitamin A and luteolin present in carrots are responsible for carrot’s health beneficial properties. Working together, they can lower down the risk of age-related memory issues, and inflammation of the brain cells. You can take other luteolin rich foods such as olive oil, bell peppers, and celery in your diet for getting relief from Parkinson’s.
  • Berries: Berries are a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants which are advantageous for brain health. The cells present in the brain get damaged with age, but the uses of berries repair these cells and enhance their health. Thus, ensuring the proper health of the brain.
  • Dark chocolates: The gradual loss of nerve cells and decreased level of dopamine are observed in Parkinson’s disease. The ingredient cocoa present inside the dark chocolate constitutes phenylethylamine, which further improves the release of dopamine.

Diet to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease:

  • Meal with high fibres

Constipation is a complication associated with Parkinson’s disease due to slower processing of the digestive system. Intake of a diet containing high quantities of fibres will prevent constipation, indigestion and disorders of the digestive organs.

  • Diet for diarrhea

Diarrhea can be seen in the patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Take small, frequent meals to maintain the levels of body energy. Try to drink water or any rehydration drink after every loose-motion. 

  • Stay hydrated

Intake of medicines for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease can lead to the loss of water content in your body. So, drink 8-10 glasses of water or any other healthy beverage to stay hydrated.

Which foods are not your friends in Parkinson’s disease?

Make sure to avoid some food items which are not your good friends while suffering from Parkinson’s. Consumption of these food items can make your condition worse and you can trap in trouble. Some avoidable food items are:

  • Avoid consumption of excessive sugary foods as they can lower down the health of the immune system. You can take natural sweetened foods like jaggery, dates, fresh fruits, etc.
  • Don’t eat too much salt, saturated fats, cholesterol, and trans fat. They can make Parkinson’s disease more severe. Keep yourself away from packaged and processed food products.
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) can interrupt the functioning of the levodopa which is used as a medicine for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. When you are taking this medicine, prevent eating oats, wheat germ, soybean, peanuts, chicken and pork.
  • Intake of alcohol and beverages of alcohol is also not healthy in the condition of Parkinson’s disease.

Diet plan for Parkinson’s disease

Try to consume your diet in this way:

  • Early morning- 1 cup milk + walnuts (4-5)
  • Breakfast- Papaya (1 bowl) + Wheat porridge (1 bowl)
  • Before Lunch- 1 apple
  • Lunch– Khichdi with raita and cucumber
  • Evening tea- 1 cup tea + cheese cubes (5-6)/ or 1 boiled egg
  • Dinner- Chapati with vegetable/ idli with sambar
  • Bedtime- Golden milk/ Turmeric milk
