Diet Chart for Acidity

Acidity or Acid Reflux is a common condition affecting a large portion of the population. Due to unhealthy eating habits, people feel burning sensation in the stomach, throat and the heart with frequent burping or hiccups. Acidity can make your mouth taste bitter and pain in the chest. 

Causes of Acidity 

In Ayurveda, Acidity is deemed as Amla Pitta caused by increase in Pitta dosha. The increase in Pitta dosha is mainly caused by stress, improper diet, skipping meals, lack of sleep and exercise. Consumption of excess fatty and oily foods is also a major reason for the acidity.

Diet Plan for Acidity or Acid Reflux

The following diet plan will help the patients of acidity or acid reflux to get rid of it by doing some corrections in their food items. 

Early morning- Herbal tea/ Aloe Vera juice

Breakfast- Oats/ 2 Egg white/ Poha/ Brown bread/ Upma/ Vermicelli/ Chapati with vegetable or dal

Mid-Morning- Fruits/ Coconut water/ Green tea/ Salad

Lunch- Two chapatti with vegetable + dahi/ brown rice with dahi/ steamed or grilled meat

Evening- Homemade fruit juice/ shakes

Dinner- Two chapatti with vegetable
Before sleep- One cup raw milk mixed with fennel

Foods to Consume and avoid in Acidity

  • None
  • Brown bread 
  • Oats
  • Brown rice
  • Cereal
  • Whole grains

All these items are high in fiber content and good to stop symptoms of acidity

❌ Fruits✔️ Fruits
  • All citrus fruits
  • All sour fruits
  • Lemon
  • Cranberries
  • Grapefruit
  • Oranges

All these fruits can increase the Pitta dosha, so better to avoid

  • Watermelon
  • Banana
  • Mango
  • Guava
  • Pear
  • Apple
  • Figs
  • Papaya
  • Muskmelon

These fruits are rich in fibre and antioxidants which relieves acidity and heal mucous membrane in stomach

❌ Vegetables✔️ Vegetables
  • Capsicum
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Taro root (Arbi)

These vegetables can increase Pitta dosha and acid production in stomach

  • Mushroom
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Pumpkin
  • Cauliflower
  • Green beans
  • Asparagus
  • Spinach
  • Carrot
  • Sweet potato

These alkaline vegetables prevent the gas formation and reduce inflammation in the stomach by pacifying Pitta dosha

❌ Lentils✔️ Lentils
  • Chickpeas (White chane)
  • Kidney bean (Rajma)
  • Black gram (Urad dal)

These lentils are heavy to digest and can cause acidity

  • Pink lentil
  • Green lentil
  • Yellow lentil
  • Soybean

These lentils are rich in nutrients, and fibers. You can consume them as they will not increase acidity and increase the digestive rate

❌ Non Veg✔️ Non Veg
  • Fried meat

Fried meat contains oil which can induce pitta dosha and acidity

  • Egg white
  • Steamed and grilled poultry and meats

You can consume these non-veg foods as they have no major effects on the Pitta dosha

❌ Spices✔️ Spices
  • Blackpepper (Kali mirch)
  • Cloves (Laung)
  • Green chili (Hari mirch)
  • Red chili (Lal mirch)

These spices are Pitta inducing and induce acidity or acid reflux. They can make the stomach upset and cause heartburn.

  • Mint (Pudina)
  • Coriander (Dhaniya)
  • Cumin (Jeera)
  • Fenugreek (Methi)
  • Carom (Ajwain)
  • Fennel (Saunf)

All these spices are Pitta pacifying in nature and reduce acidity

  • Caffeine
  • Tomato sauce
  • Smoking
  • Hot drinks
  • Spicy foods
  • High fat foods
  • Alcohol
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Fast foods
  • Herbal tea (prepared from Jeera, Dhaniya and Saunf)
  • Amla  (two times daily)
  • Mixture of Amla, fennel and licorice powder

● Go for a walk for at least 45 minutes
● Don’t skip meals, especially the breakfast
● Consume 8-10 glasses of water daily
● Prefer whole fruits over their juices
● Avoid citrus and fried foods
